Low season downtime for yacht crew can be both a challenge and an opportunity. How best to fill the time productively? How to keep spirits up during winter months away from family and loved ones? How to make friends in a new location?
Porto Montenegro has created a year-round community with a dedicated crew events programme intended to answer just these questions. A monthly calendar of activities, tournaments and trips away means there is always something going on and someone to do it with.
The land of the ‘black mountain' (monte/mountain, negro/black) has no shortage of high altitude adventures on offer, from hiking, trail running, basketball and tennis followed by a hearty meal on top of Mount Lovcen (60mins drive) to skiing or snowboarding on the slopes of Kolasin while staying at the complimentary crew ski chalet (3hour drive). Mountain biking is becoming increasingly popular on Durmitor mountain (3hour drive) as are the more sedate walking tours on Vrmac hill that take in the historic Lastva village (15minutes drive).
September and October may not have the crowds of summer but they do have fine weather and the water in the Bay is still warm enough for waterskiing, wakeboarding and scuba diving. Adrenaline junkies can try rafting on the Tara Canyon (3hour drive), canyoning in the Nevidio canyon (3hour drive), or a combination of rafting and canyoning on the Skurda river behind Kotor (15minutes drive). Additionally, these professionally organized are offered at reduced rates to crew based in the marina and typically depart on Saturday or Sunday mornings with all transport and equipment included in the package.
Completing the calendar are regular parties at the onsite crew bar, film screenings and dinner nights at the Yacht Club, as well as yoga, dance classes, rowing, ten-pin bowling, squash, tennis, billiards and table tennis. Finally, the Yacht Club has full RYA training facilities and a year-round regatta program.
