Kotor historical old town offers a remarkably well-preserved collection of medieval buildings, including merchant houses, churches and cathedrals, and palaces, many of which are open to the public as museums. Perched 293m above the town, San Giovanni Fortress keeps a watchful eye on Kotor, its rugged stone walls embracing the town in an impressive four-kilometre loop. To enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Kotor and bay, simply brave the 1,360 steps from the town’s northern river gate to the fortress, pausing half-way to catch your breath and to admire the 500-year-old Our Lady of Remedy church, which was built by grateful plague survivors.
