Montenegro is located in the heart of Europe in the west-central Balkans, within three hours’ flight time of all major European cities. It is bounded by the Adriatic Sea and Croatia to the southwest, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east and Albania to the southeast.

The Bay of Kotor area is rich in history and culture, and offers a wide variety of attractions and excursions. The history of the nearby walled town of Kotor can be traced back more than 2000 years, and the town was the Adriatic seat of the ruling Venetian Republic for almost 400 years. Today, it is famed for its attractive buildings, and numerous churches and museums.

In the nearby town of Perast, the only artificial island in the Adriatic – built by returning sailors as an offering of thanks over centuries, beginning in 1452 – is home to Our Lady of the Rocks, a small but beautiful church that houses a collection of 17th-century Baroque paintings, along with a museum dedicated to the history of the region.

Given its status as a year-round residential community and temperate climate (with more than 280 days of sunshine annually) there’s usually something to see or do in Porto Montenegro whenever you visit. Porto Montenegro plays host to a packed calendar of maritime, sporting, social, cultural and fashion events throughout the year. Highlights include the thrilling Polo in the Port, regular international couture shows, the prestigious Made in New York jazz festivals, and the many sail regattas held in Boka Bay during the summer season.

Now in its twentieth year, the Kotor Art festival is an essential expression of Montenegrin cultural identity, and brings together artists and musicians from more than 100 countries during July and August.

The region is also famous for its Venetian carnivals, with colourful summer and winter celebrations held in Kotor, Tivat and Budva. The village of Perast holds the Fasinada maritime festival every July 22, when sailors honour the Virgin Mary. While in Herceg Novi, fireworks, boat parades and all-night celebrations mark Boka Night, which crowns each tourist season.
