Rugby In Montenegro

Rugby in Montenegro

From what started as an informal weekly get-together amongst ex-pats and locals familiar to the game, Rugby Union has now exploded in the towns of Tivat and Kotor in less than 12 months there are over 100 players regularly training each week. The weekend of 19-20 November 2011 marked the second international tour for the Tivat Arsenal Rugby Club, this time to Sarajevo, Bosnia & Hercegovina where they played against Zenica Celik and Sarajevo Tornado Rugby Club. The club lost the first match against Sarajevo 0-17 and won the second match 10-7 against Zenica. View the full gallery on Facebook The traveling party included a mens team, a ladies team, a kids teams (U13) and a group of 40 supporters. The majority of the team is made up of local players from Tivat and Kotor, staff from Porto Montenegro and yacht crew from the boats docked at the Porto Montenegro marina. This is a sport seemingly made for the generally tall and well-built Montenegrins, many of whom only really had the option of soccer, basketball, European handball, martial arts and water polo when growing up. Rugby in Montenegro, with the initial support and sponsorship from Porto Montenegro, has a big future – with the opportunity for young local players to experience the game's good-natured culture and camaraderie. This year has already featured a tour to the Krusevac Sevens tournament in Serbia and matches against visiting teams from Split, Croatia and Sarajevo, Bosnia and Hercegovina. Next year, the teams are planning to host tours from Germany, Switzerland and England, as well as several regional tours.
